2004 – A recap

8 January 2005 5 Comments

The year 2004 has given the Indian Film Industry some hits, many flops and several average movies.

Murder was a big hit especially in India and the credit goes to Anurag Basu and Mahesh Bhatt. Another ‘M’ venture by Inder Kumar was Masti, which managed to steal hearts with its unique comedy. Farah Khan made her directorial debut with a hit film Main Hoon Na. On the other hand, the well-established Yash Chopra came out with a Shahrukh Khan starrer, Veer-Zaara. Kunal Kohli’s second attempt as a director Hum Tum (after Mujhse Dosti Karoge) worked well at the box-office and was declared a hit. Garv: Pride and Honour directed by Punit Issar had big collections and stayed in the hearts of the viewers for quite a while. Produced by N.R. Pachisia and Directed by Deepak Shivdasani, Julie became known for of its boldness. Thanks to Neha Dhupia. Sajid Nadiadwala’s Mujhse Shaadi Karogi was applauded for its funny script and the amazing performances by Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Amrish Puri and Kader Khan. Yash Raj Films produced a fast and furious flick Dhoom, which didn’t have the best opening but managed to thrive at the box office. Another one of Yash Raj Films production, Veer-Zaara was a big hit overseas as well as in India. Priyadarshan’s Hulchul, another attempt to comedy after Hera Pheri and Hungama was also liked by the audience but not as much as the other two movies of Priyadarshan. Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Swades was not warmly welcomes in the homeland but received recognition in abroad.

‘M’azing!
The lucky letter award of the year 2004 goes to none other than ‘M.’ Murder, Masti, Main Hoon Na and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi have two similarities, they all were hits and start with the letter ‘M.’ So, is this a coincidence or are film makers starting to be superstitious?

Ironically, movies like Madhoshi, Meenaxi, Morning Raga, Muskaan and Maqbool (also starting with ‘M’) didn’t do so well at the box office.

Multi-starrers:
Movies like Masti, Main Hoon Na, Dhoom, Veer-Zaara, Mujhse Saadi Karogi and Hulchul are all multi-starrers and hits as well. The audience seems to like movies with various stars in them. Multi-starrers these days did great at the box office in 2004.

A Big year for…Shahrukh Khan:
SRK delivered three hits in the year 2004. The first being a directorial debut of Farah Khan and produced by Gauri Khan (Red Chillies Entertainment), Main Hoon Na. Shahrukh’s second hit was Yash Chopra’s Veer-Zaara, which was an attempt to bring India and Pakistan closer by bringing Veer and Zaara together in the film. Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Swades was SRK’s third hit of this year. Even though, Swades was a flop in India, it was a hit overseas. Shahrukh’s performance was especially applauded by the critics as well as the audience.

Overall, the year 2004 was not a big hit for the Indian Film Industry due to the list of flops that it delivered. Let’s see if 2005 does some wonders…

A good analysis! Very well written!

My favs of 2004 wud definitely include Hum Tum, Swades, Rain Coat, Veer Zaara, Dhoom, Fida , Dev, Paap, Masti, MSK, and yeah yeah… Julie as well… despite the bold scenes there was a poignant story of a girl who is desperately searching for true love and when she finds it, is skeptical about it!

As a production house, Yash Raj Films never had it so good- three bumper hits in a row – Dhoom, Hum Tum and Veer Zaara.
